Where Should I Go and What Should I Do If I Suspect a Hereditary Condition?
Nearly every major hospital in the Netherlands has a clinic for familial tumors, although the name of the department may vary. Can’t find one near you? Look for the Clinical Genetics department.
Do you suspect that your family might have a hereditary predisposition to certain conditions? Discuss this first with your general practitioner (GP). If you feel your GP is not taking your concerns seriously, you can contact the Clinical Genetics department directly. On this website, you’ll find more information in the care standard.
Good Preparation Is Half the Battle
If you suspect a hereditary condition in your family, it’s important to be well-prepared for your consultation. Create an overview of why you think this might be the case. A family tree can be very helpful. Below, you’ll find an example of such an overview. Pay particular attention to:
- Ages at which certain conditions occurred.
- Types of cancer that appear in the family.
- Age at first diagnosis and/or death.
- Gender (male/female) and the specific type of cancer, if known.
Don’t have all the details? Ask older family members for more information. If hereditary conditions have already been investigated in your family, request the relevant records.
