COVID-19partly determined by genetics

There are locations in your DNA that partly determine how sick you become from a COVID-19 infection. This is shown by research involving the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), the University of Groningen, and the Lifelines biobank. “The findings could contribute to a medicine for COVID-19,” says Lude Franke, professor of Genetics at the UMCG. He explains that the research shows that genetic factors influence the severity of a COVID-19 infection. “Because the first locations in the DNA have now been found, we can determine the influence of those locations and which biological processes are disrupted.

This knowledge will hopefully contribute to the development of new antiviral drugs or the identification of existing drugs known to affect those same locations in the DNA.” Global Collaboration Franke is one of the initiators of a research project searching for genetic and environmental factors influencing the development of a coronavirus infection. Since the start of the corona crisis, tens of thousands of people from Northern Netherlands have been completing a bi-weekly health questionnaire. By combining this data, differences in DNA could be identified. “We found a link between the severity of the COVID-19 disease course and specific locations in the DNA,” explains the professor of Genetics. To learn more about the coronavirus, genetic researchers worldwide are collaborating through the COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative. The findings from the ongoing Lifelines Corona study have also been shared and used through this consortium. Source: https://www.rtvnoord.nl/nieuws/
